An ‘immature and foolish’ man has been jailed for attacking a police officer who questioned him about being outside during the coronavirus pandemic.
Jack Kent, 20, was spotted walking on Rochdale Road, in Blackley, by officers investigating another incident at 9.20pm on March 25. They shone their headlights at him before approaching to question him about their case and why he was not in lockdown.https://nkaros.data.bloghttps://nkaros.data.blog
Kent then ran from the scene, sparking a ‘short chase’, which resulted in officers placing him in handcuffs as he shouted, ‘get the f**k off me’, Manchester Magistrates’ court heard.
He then kicked out at the police twice as they tried to get him into a police van, hitting one of them in the leg twiceProsecutor Martha Dowd told the court: ‘[Kent] was acting suspiciously when seeing the police car and he was evasive.
‘[Officers] were also looking to speak to him about why he was out, considering the current circumstances, as it was 9.20pm. They were going to stop him and ask why he was out due to the restrictions of Covid-19 last set out.’https://nkaros.data.blog
She continued: ‘He refused to get in the van and then kicked out twice and made
contact with the officer’s right leg and left shin.
‘The officer then shouted “get on the floor now” as they were going to
restrain him to prevent further injury. He refused to get down and tried kicking the officer one more time
It was the second time Kent had been arrested in a matter of weeks, after police were called to a homeless shelter at Christchurch Baptist Church where he had been staying.Kent’s defence lawyer Andrew Gilmore stated that he lacked maturity and has ‘poor consequential thinking skills’, causing him to also ‘react badly’ to authority.https://nkaros.data.blog
He continued: ‘This is one opportunity to find the good in Mr Kent and to take
advantage of what’s being offered by the probation to put this immature and foolish behaviour behind him and square up to responsibilities as a man and an adult.’
District Judge John Temperley sentenced Kent to 20 weeks in prison, telling him that the offences were ‘made more serious’ by his record.
He said: ‘These offences are so serious that only immediate imprisonment will suffice.’https://nkaros.data.blog

Coronavirus: Stop Wearing Masks If You Are Not Sick – WHO Reiterates
World Health Organization (WHO) officials Monday said they still recommend people not to wear face masks unless they are sick with Covid-19 or caring for someone who is sick.https://nkaros.data.blog
“There is no specific evidence to suggest that the wearing of masks by the mass population has any potential benefit. In fact, there’s some evidence to suggest the opposite in the misuse of wearing a mask properly or fitting it properly,” Dr. Mike Ryan, Executive Director of the WHO health emergencies program, said at a media briefing in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday..https://nkaros.data.blog
“There also is the issue that we have a massive global shortage,” Ryan said about masks and other medical supplies. “Right now the people most at risk from this virus are frontline health workers who are exposed to the virus every second of every day. The thought of them not having masks is horrific.”https://nkaros.data.blog
Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, an infectious disease epidemiologist with the WHO, also said at Monday’s briefing that it is important “we prioritize the use of masks for those who need it most,” which would be frontline health care workers.
“In the community, we do not recommend the use of wearing masks unless you yourself are sick and as a measure to prevent onward spread from you if you are ill,” Van Kerkhove said.”The masks that we recommend are for people who are at home and who are sick and for those individuals who are caring for those people who are home that are sick,” she said.https://nkaros.data.blog
World Health Organization officials warned at a media briefing last week that globally there is a “significant shortage” of medical supplies, including personal protective gear or PPE, for doctors.
“We need to be clear,” Van Kerkhove said last week. “The world is facing a significant shortage of PPE for our frontline workers — including masks and gloves and gowns and face shields and protecting our health care workers must be the top priority for use of this PPE https://nkaros.data.bloghttps://nkaros.data.blog
COVID-19: “We’ll Get All Infected Persons” – Oppong Nkrumah On Ghanaians Who ‘Escaped’ To Other Regions
two-week partial lockdown is currently in force in the Greater Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Kumasi in the Ashanti region.https://nkaros.data.blog
Prior to the lockdown which started at 1 am Monday, 30th March 2020, there were reports that some Ghanaians were moving from the places where the lockdown has been imposed into other regions.https://nkaros.data.blog
The fear was that if some were carrying the virus, they could infect other people in regions where no case has been recorded.https://nkaros.data.blog
Speaking to this in a one-on-one interview on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo‘, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said even though some might have gone to other regions, they will still be tested if their names are in the database.
According to him, during the two-week lockdown period, all the contacts traced will be tested and so even if the person is in another region, he or she cannot escape testing.
https://nkaros.data.blogHe said because we are in a democratic dispensation, the government couldn’t have prevented people from moving.
“We need to look at balance to avoid over-reacting especially because we are in a democratic dispensation . . . you can’t do anything out of proportion. The teams conducting the contact tracing are also in the other regions and so if an infected person is out of the region but is part of the database, we will get them,” he assured..www.Youtube.b/jm

COVID-19: I’m Sad Many Ghanaians Misunderstood Akufo-Addo’s Partial Lockdown Call – Dr Nsiah Asare
President Akufo-Addo’s Health Advisor, Dr Nsiah Asare has indicated that many Ghanaians did not understand the President’s call last Friday when he partially locked down some parts of the country…click on https://nkaros.data.blog
He described as sad when he saw a video of crowded people at the Agbogbloshie market engaging in business after the President had announced to lockdown municipalities in Greater Accra, Tema, Greater Kumasi and Kasoa on March 30.https://nkaros.data.blog
Speaking on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ Morning Show, Dr. Nsiah Asare reminded Ghanaians that the purpose of the President’s declaration is to promote social distancing as that will reduce the spread of the COVID-19 in the country.https://nkaros.data.blog
“I became sad when I saw a video after the President had announced the partial lockdown; a lot of Ghanaians did not understand it and therefore crowded at the Agbogbloshie market. There was no social distancing at the market place,” he said.https://nkaros.data.blog

He was of the view that if Ghanaians comply with the restricted movement given by the President, the COVID-19 Medical Team will be able to work effectively to reduce the spread and then contain the disease in the country.https://nkaros.data.blog
He reiterated that the restricted movement announced by President Akufo-Addo will not allow a lot of people to go out as Ghanaians have now learnt not to get too close to people when talking to them.
He, therefore, announced that Noguchi Memorial Institute and the medical team have enough equipment to test people in the restricted areas who have contacted people who have tested positive for the COVID-19.
He added that there will be mandatory testing in the partial lockdown areas to capture all those who have had an encounter with those who have tested positive.
To him, the idea should have been to test everybody in the restricted areas as it is being done in the United Kingdom but the means to test everyone is not there, hence, limiting it to only those who have been in contact with those who have tested positive in the restricted areas.
“We want people who are in the Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi, the epicentres, to stay at home; we want to take advantage to contact those who have had an encounter with those who have tested positive. We will come around to do contact-tracing and test all of them whether they are showing signs of the COVID-19 or not,” he indicated.https://nkaros.data.blog
Convert schools and hostels into quarantine centres – Napo urgesBy Richards Onel Saga – March 27, 2020 83
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Education
Minister for Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh has admonished government to consider converting all public schools nationwide into mandatory quarantine centres to cater for COVID-19 patients in the country.
He said instead of lying idle, the schools will provide a great deal of support should they be turned into halfway houses as government moves to contain and control the novel coronavirus pandemic.
He added that the move has become necessary to check the community spread trend Ghana has begun recording.
According to the Manhyia South legislator, self-isolation, particularly in compound houses is dangerous and puts all tenants at risk, hence the need to have more centres.
“Some people are taking it for a joke but it’s serious than we think. My position is that government should start preparing the closed down schools as a halfway house…If we will be supportive of government’s effort, my suggestion is government’s plans should include converting the secondary schools and hostels as quarantine centres,” he said on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show on Friday, March 27, 2020.
He also questioned why some student groups have decided to kick against such a move.
“I heard NUGS (National Union of Ghana Students) say they won’t allow government to take the hostels. I don’t get them when they take such a stance. Where is the student of Legon (University Ghana) who got infected? Whose house should she be sent to?”
“Now the students are home. Where should the infected persons be kept? If the person is not in a critical condition and does not have to be sent to the hospital, to avoid the spread of the disease, we have to send them there and provide them with certain essentials like food while we monitor them,” he intimated.
He added that “Prince Charles is under self-isolation in a whole castle alone. We don’t have a castle in Ash Town and so we need to help government in situations like this.”
Dr Opoku Prempeh further observed that doctors in the country are conspiring to leverage the COVID-19 crisis to make certain demands aimed at laying down their tools.
The minister who was obviously not enthused about the development cautioned the health professions against same.
“I learnt the Ghana Medical Association has called on doctors to go on strike… but we need to think before we take certain actions; I hope it is not true. If you are embarking on a strike action in these critical moments, who takes care of your relative who may contract the virus?”
“Emergencies are not times for theories and taking advantage of. Imagine your wife or children getting coronavirus; what will you do? That should inform their decisions,” he cautioned
