Coronavirus: Ghana’s Cases Low Because Akufo-Addo Is Decisive – Sammy Awuku

The National Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sammy Awuku says coronavirus cases in Ghana would have worsened if Ghana had a President flip-flopping with decisions to contain the pandemic.https://nkaros.data.bloghttps://nkaros.data.blog

According to him, Ghana is blessed to have President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at this crucial time which requires pragmatic decisions to tackle the pandemic head-on.

“Under our circumstances government has done tremendously well in taking decisive decisions, bold decisions. Ghana is blessed to have Akufo-Addo and the NPP at this time. Because of the purposefulness, the courage and determination to confront this issue head-on. If we had any leader who was flip-flopping this time, by now Ghana would have recorded a higher number in terms of this deadly pandemic”https://nkaros.data.blog

Globally, coronavirus cases have soared to over 1.1million infections with 60,000 deaths. Ghana’s case count has reached 205 confirmed cases with 5 deaths as of April 3, 2020. Ghana recorded first case of Covid-19 on March 13, 2020.

President Akufo-Addo on March 27, 2020 announced a partial lockdown of Accra and Parts of Greater Kumasi for two weeks as an enhanced measure to prevent community spread having closed down all Borders – Land, sea and Air spaces. Government also imposed mandatory 14 days quarantine for returnees in the country. Additionally, the President has established a Covid-19 Fund to help mobilize resources to fight the pandemic.

Sammy Awuku believes these decisions and interventions by the President have mitigated the spread of Coronavirus disease in the country.

“Look at the countries around us, even South Sahara Africa. South Africa jumped from a hundred to over five hundred in less than a week. At least if you look closely at it- government closing it borders both Air, Land and Sea it was a major decision”.

Sammy Awuku said this Saturday when he joined an exercise to disinfest markets in the Eastern Regional capital – Koforidua.https://nkaros.data.blog

The Eastern region is the 10th region to benefit from the nationwide disinfestation exercise being carried out by government and Zoomlion Ghana Limited. About 200 market centres across the region were expected to be disinfested.

COVID-19: Minority Describes Speaker As A ‘Walking Illegality’ As He Adjourns Sitting Sine Die

The Minority in Parliament has spoken against a decision by the Speaker of the House, Prof. Aaron Mike Ocquaye to suspend sitting indefinitely.https://nkaros.data.blog

The Speaker of Parliament during sitting today, Saturday, said Members of Parliament cannot go on a definite recess since ‘we are not in normal times’.

This means the Speaker can assemble Members of Parliament any day without the required 14-day notice per the standing orders to address issues especially relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the Minority claims the Speaker has no power to suspend sitting sine die instead of adjourning.

Speaking at a press conference after proceedings in the House had ended today, Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu described the Speaker as a ‘walking illegality’ because there was no consultation before he suspended sitting indefinitely.

Throwing Tantrums Unnecessary
The Majority leader, Osei Kyei Mensa Bonsu also speaking at a press conference said had the Minority attended meetings called by the Speaker, they would have understood his decision.

He described the Minority leaders’ ‘throwing of tantrums’ as unfortunate and hoped that with time, everyone will be on the same page.

According to him, “my colleagues have decided not to see the Speaker; they failed to attend meetings by the Speaker . . . this kind of behaviour is untenable. If you bastardize the Speaker, you are bringing down the image of parliament”.

My babies are too young to read this now. And they’d barely recognize me in my gear. But if they lose me to COVID I want them to know Mommy tried really hard to do her job. #GetMePPE #NYC

Dr. Griggs, a pediatric surgery fellow at Columbia University Medical Center, told CNN’s John Berman that it was a long, exhausting weekend for her and her colleagues.

‘Walking into the fire’

The tweet caught the attention of many, including hip-hop artist, Missy Elliot.”We are going to speak it out of mouths that your babies will read this & you will be around to tell them about your bravery & others! Thank you for your hard work to help save lives,” Elliot tweeted.

Griggs said she thinks her photo to her two kids struck a nerve with people because her message “reflected what a lot of healthcare workers, especially in New York, are feeling right now.”But despite the messages of support, Griggs said she doesn’t feel brave.

Waking up and walking into the hospital can feel like walking into the fire,” she said. “I feel scared every day but I’m still very determined to go to work every day and do the job that needs to be done because I still love my job.”Aidoo-Richard Sagacious is a script writer, blogger and a founder of nkaros.data.blog/ (Nkaros Updates). Griggs said hospitals around the city are still in dire need of personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers and she’d like to see a continued effort to secure more.

But it’s not just gonna be PPE that we run out of,” she said. “We need to focus on a lot of other supply chains, including critical medications, more ventilators and more machines that can give patients dialysis.”nkaros.data.blog/ (Nkaros Updates).

One thing remains constant for Griggs during this time. She said the comradery throughout the hospital among the staff is inspiring.

‘Staying home is saving a life’

Griggs and her husband, who is also a healthcare worker, recently wrote their wills.”It wasn’t a move that we made out of panic, we just wanted to be prepared,” she said. “I think it felt like the responsible thing to do as parents at this moment in time because both of us have friends that have contracted Covid-19. Some have recovered and some are still very sick and some of our colleagues are patients at the hospital.”nkaros.data.blog/ (Nkaros Updates).

“Part of that role is staying at home, sheltering in place, flattening the curve, buying us time, holding the line,” she said. “I have so many friends at home who feel frustrated and claustrophobic but what everyone is doing by staying home is saving a life.”

Ridge Hospital doctor tests positive for coronavirus

The Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) is one of the medical facilities to manage the coronavirus pandemic.

A Specialist doctor with the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge is under self quarantined after he tested positive for the Covid-19.

He had returned into the country from South Africa, prior to the partial lockdown, the Hospital management said in a release Friday.

“This came to the fore after he had undergone the two weeks of mandatory self-quarantine. The COVID19 team has since been taking care of him at the self-quarantine centre and he is currently doing well,” the statement added.

It added that Management of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (GARH), Ridge is in touch with him and we will support him till he recovers.

“We have also put in place all other measures to ensure that all the necessary care he needs is provided,” it assured.

The statement emphasised that the case was not locally transmitted but rather imported from South Africa.

Currently, no frontline staff at the facility has tested positive as safety measures have been put in place to ensure that no staff gets infected.
The hospital management, therefore, urged colleague staff and family of the doctor to stay calm and support him

RegionalChemu Lagoon Floating Bridge blockade causes fear among Chorkor residents

Chorkor residents especially those who live along the Chemu Lagoon in the Ablekuma South Municipality of the GreatGreaterr Region say they are living on the edge.https://nkaros.data.blog

They told Joy News that they are scared that the ‘floating bridge’ has blocked the surface of the nearby lagoon with a huge pile of plastic waste.

According to them, this can easily cause flooding in the community whenever it rains

https://nkaros.data.blog

The floating bridge which is the first of its kind in Accra was constructed by the Ablekuma West Constituency MP, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, with the support of the Environment Ministry, to facilitate safe crossing of people.

Though the lagoon was dredged before the bridge was constructed, the fact that the bridge berths across the lagoon, it has become the piling point for any floating material.

The recent announcement by the Ghana Metrological Agency that heavy rainfall this year will cause flooding in some parts of Accra has got the residents worried

Coincidentally the Chemu Lagoon which draws water from Dansoman and other suburbs in Accra enters the sea in the community.
The area is one of the most hard-hit communities by tidal waves and for that matter, any floods occurrence will have disastrous consequences.
