Coroñavirus-Mahama Calls For Urgent ECOWAS Meeting

The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama, has called for an urgent meeting of the Authority of Heads of State and Governments of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to discuss and take decisions on a sub-regional response to the growing COVID-19 pandemic across the West African Region.
Speaking during a Friday Muslim Prayer service to end three days of prayer and fasting called by the NDC, Mr Mahama, who is a former Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, argued that the meeting of the sub-regional leaders is important and urgent to help in curbing the spread of the disease across the neighbouring countries.

“It is important for the ECOWAS to arrange an urgent teleconference of our Heads of State to coordinate a subregion-wide response to the COVID-19 disease. This might include restriction of movement between our countries”, he noted.
The prayer service, attended by the National Chief Iman Sheikh Nuhu Sharabutu, the Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Ghana Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih, the Head of the Ahl-Sunnah al- Jamaat Sheikh Umar Ibrahim and other Muslim leaders followed a Christian service held on Sunday.

The NDC declared the three days of fasting and prayers to seek God’s intervention in the wake of the outbreak of the coronavirus in the country.
Mr Mahama also urged the government to, as a matter of urgency, strengthen public health management procedures, and provide the needed resources and logistics for managing the pandemic.
This, he said, is critical if “frontline healthcare workers are to have the confidence to continue to battle the disease.

“As has been outlined by our COVID Technical Team in its engagements, in addition to a concerted effort to provide regular, accurate and timely information, the government must work extra hard to ensure the implementation of adequate community mitigation measures”, Mr. Mahama added.

COVID-19: what you can do and can’t do.

During the two-week partial lockdown of Accra and Kumasi from Monday, March 30, the over 3.2 million residents in these areas have been advised by President Akufo-Addo to only leave their homes in search of essential items or activities. http://nkaros.data.blog

Among these essentials listed by the President are food, medicine and water.

Ghana currently has 141 known cases of the virus, five deaths and two recoveries.

This will be the first time under Ghana’s Fourth Republic that a President had stripped away a significant number of basic freedoms of citizens in the stead of other African countries like Rwanda and South Africa which have imposed strict curfews and shutdowns in an attempt to halt the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The only activities that the average citizen will be allowed to undertake during this period will be banking transactions and the use of public toilet facilities.

As part of the lockdown, there shall be no inter-city movement of vehicles and aircraft for private or commercial purposes.

Only vehicles and aircrafts providing essential services and those carrying cargo will have some freedom to operate.

Motorists using motorbikes will not be allowed to carry any additional person whilst all intra-city passenger vehicles, such as trotros and taxis, have been directed to reduce the number of passengers.

This is in a bid to ensure appropriate social distancing and hygiene protocols.

“Additionally, all commercial vehicle stations shall observe appropriate hygiene protocols and social distancing. The Ministry of Transport has engaged the transport operators and unions in this regard,” the President noted in his address.

In the markets of the affected metropolises, only persons involved in the food value chain can operate in the markets during this period.

In effect, all persons involved in the growing, processing, and selling the food items will be able to make a living during this period.

But vendors of clothing, electrical gadgets, beauty products, among other everyday items, will not be able to trade for the 14 days of the lockdown.

On the operations of persons in the food value chain, the President said the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has also engaged with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and the leaders of the market associations in the country to make satisfactory arrangements about the operation of the markets that ensure observance of social distancing and enhanced hygiene protocols.

Other workers who will be able to head to their jobs come Monday will be persons aligned to the production, distribution and marketing of food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, medicine, paper and plastic packages, environmental and sanitation activities, road and railway construction workers, members of the security agencies, workers at fuel stations and staff of utility, telecommunications, e-commerce and digital service providers.

In addition, all members of the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary shall be exempt from the restrictions…..nkarosupdate

The “restricted document” is titled “Deployment strategy for lockdown of Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Obuasi” theghanareport.com has seen.
The government has been under pressure to announce a lockdown at every news of an increase in infections. Ghana has so far recorded 136 cases of the deadly virus as of March 27, 2020 with the Upper West region recording its first case of the virus.
Already, there is a ban on public gathering, the worst hit being churches and mosques. That ban announced March 15, 2020 was followed by the president’s order on March 21, 2020 to close the country’s borders to prevent imported cases of the virus.
But with another weekend coming, there are indications, the government’s measures will be escalated.
The police service document only dated March 2020 reads, “it is anticipated that a partial to full lockdown of some parts of the country will be executed in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus.”

Ghana becomes the sixth African country to announce a lockdown as the continent watches the ravaging effects of coronavirus in Europe.
South Africa, Libya, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Mali, DR Congo have all locked down.
Coronavirus, also called covid-19, spreads through physical contact. Education Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, summed up what experts say is the best way to deal with the spread.
“The virus doesn’t move. It needs me and you to move. If you stop, the virus stops”
