InternationalCoronavirus could be airborne – WHO study revealsSource : cnbc.com

The World Health Organization is considering “airborne precautions” for medical staff after a new study showed the coronavirus can survive in the air in some settings.https://nkaros.data.blog

The virus is transmitted through droplets, or little bits of liquid, mostly through sneezing or coughing, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHO’s emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, told reporters during a virtual news conference on Monday. “When you do an aerosol-generating procedure like in a medical care facility, you have the possibility to what we call aerosolize these particles, which means they can stay in the air a little bit longer.https://nkaros.data.blog

She added: “It’s very important that health-care workers take additional precautions when they’re working on patients and doing those procedures.”

World health officials say the respiratory disease spreads through human-to-human contact, droplets carried through sneezing and coughing as well as germs left on inanimate objects. The coronavirus can go airborne, staying suspended in the air depending on factors such as heat and humidity, they said.https://nkaros.data.blog

Kerkhove said health officials are aware of several studies in a number of countries looking at the different environmental conditions that COVID-19 can persist. Scientists are specifically looking at how humidity, temperature and ultraviolet lighting affects the disease as well as how long it lives on different surfaces, including steel, she said.
Health officials use the information to make sure WHO’s guidance is appropriate, and “so far … we are confident that the guidance that we have is appropriate,” she added. Health officials recommend medical staff wear so-called N95 masks because they filter out about 95% of all liquid or airborne particles.

“In health-care facilities, we make sure health-care workers use standard droplet precautions with the exception … that they’re doing an aerosol-generating procedure,” she said.

Robert Redfield, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told Congress last month that the agency was aggressively evaluating how long COVID-19 can survive, particularly on surfaces.https://nkaros.data.blog

“On copper and steel, it’s pretty typical, it’s pretty much about two hours,” Redfield said at a House hearing. “But I will say on other surfaces — cardboard or plastic — it’s longer, and so we are looking at this.”

Redfield added infections contracted from surfaces rather than through the air could have contributed to the outbreak on the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

Separately, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Monday that there’s been a rapid escalation of COVID-19 cases over the past week, adding, “we have not seen an urgent enough escalation in testing, isolation and contact tracing, which is the backbone of the response.”

“We have a simple message for all countries: test, test, test. Test every suspected case, if they test positive, isolate them and find out who they have been in contact with two days before they developed symptoms and test those people, too,” Tedros said.

Coronavirus: Ghana Must Go For Total Lockdown – Tobinco Boss

Chairman of the Tobinco Group of Companies, Nana Amo Tobbin I, prefers a total lockdown of the country to contain the spread of the ravaging coronavirus pandemic in the country.

He commended the government for coming out with some practical measures to tackle the Coronavirus pandemic but quickly added that a total lockdown of the country would have made a huge impact.
The business mogul was speaking on Atinka TV’s new programme, “COVID-19-The Impact”.

https://nkaros.data.bloghttps://nkaros.data.blog

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last Friday announced a partial lockdown of Greater Accra, Kasoa, Tema and Greater Kumasi as part of measures to contain the spread of pandemic.

The measures took effect on Monday at 1 am.
However, Nana Amo Tobbin I, who is also the President of the Pharmaceutical Division of the Association of Ghana Industries argued that the partial lockdown is not completely achieving its intended purpose.

He said the interval between the time of the declaration (Friday, March 27, 2020) and the start of the lockdown (Monday, March 30, 2020) allowed people to travel to areas that do not have reported cases.

He said the movement may have allowed persons who unknowingly have the virus to spread it as they travel across the country.

https://nkaros.data.blog

According to him, Wuhan in China, India and other countries which adopted the total lockdown policy are tackling the pandemic effectively.

Nana Amo Tobbin I, who also runs the biggest pharmaceutical company in West Africa, Entrance Pharmaceutical, was, however, optimistic that, Ghana will soon go for the total lockdown to tackle the pandemic.

https://nkaros.data.blog
Touching on homelessness amidst the lockdown, Nana Amo Tobbin I, said the government should have considered housing Kayayee’s and other homeless people before announcing the lockdown.
His comments follow reports that two cargo trucks transporting kayayei’s (head porters) to Walewale in the Northern Region were busted in Ejisu in the Ashanti Region.

The kayayei’s were fleeing Accra after the government announced a two-week lockdown to contain and stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in Ghana.

Nana Amo Tobbin I explained that the government could have considered housing these homeless people in the dormitories of the various Senior High Schools within the period of the lockdown since the students are currently home while the dormitories are empty.https://nkaros.data.blog

COVID-19: Virtual learning on TV for SHS, JHS students begins April 3

Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh

The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) has secured an agreement with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for a free-to-air 24-hour dedicated channel for the broadcast of educational materials beginning April 3, 2020.https:.//nkaros.data.blog/

The sector Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, said the learning programmes would be rolled out on all mediums — radio, television and online — with support from the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of information.

The channel, known as Ghana Learning TV, will initially broadcast educational materials for senior high school (SHS) students, while content for the Junior High School (JHS ) and basic school students follow in due course.

The Director-General of the GES, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, in an interview with the Daily Graphic on Tuesday, March 31, said in addition to the television, the ministry and the GES, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, was finalising discussions with the GBC for a dedicated nationwide broadcast on radio.

Memorandum of understanding
Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU), the GES is expected to produce educational materials for the GBC to broadcast nationwide on a free-to-air channel for the purpose of learning for students whilehttps:.//nkaros.data.blog/

“So, we now have an arrangement with the GBC to broadcast nationwide on a 24-hour free-to-air dedicated channel,” Prof. Opoku-Amankwa explained that the content for the JHS and basic, as well as the pre-school was being finalised.

He added: “In doing this, we have selected a number of master trainers and master teachers to support in delivery and production; we are working closely with our teachers to produce the content for both television and radio,” he explained.
Prof. Opoku-Amankwa added that the content was based on the new curriculum produced by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) and content from other sources including scholastic in literacy and numeracy for the KG pupils.

https:.//nkaros.data.blog/

He explained that the arrangement was that whatever was broadcast on the television “is also made available on radio for a wider reach to the students.”

Parallel online learning system.

Online platform
Touching on the online version, he said the ministry and the Centre for Distance Learning and Open Schooling (CENDLOS) had created an online study platform for all SHS students via the icampusgh.com, which was already in use and as of this morning, 22,000 plus students had logged-on to the website.

He said to access the site, students would be required to enter their BECE index number as the username and suffix it with the year they wrote the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

https:.//nkaros.data.blog/“For instance, SHS Three students will be required to add 17 to the index number E.g. 309074025 then 17 to read 30907402517, SHS Two students will add 18 and SHS one students will add 19” he said, adding that the student would be required to enter ghana@12345 as their default password and click on log-in.

Prof. Opoku-Amankwa added that individual students would be required to change the default password before they could continue using the platform.

“The students will have to click on ‘view all courses’ to see the subjects available,” he further stated and asked the students to click on any of the courses available to enroll.

Prof. Opoku-Amankwa explained that in addition to the iCampus platform, “we are also creating an online parallel learning system to ensure that eventually, every class in this country from the lower primary to the SHS had an online parallel classroom.”

He said the online parallel classroom allowed the setting up of a learning space for students and teachers such that all the lessons teachers were teaching in the classroom were also available online.

“This connects to all the learning resources with the Ghana Library Authority and so when students get online, they are able to immediately get access to all the contents with the Ghana Library Authority,” Prof. Opoku-Amankwa explained.https:.//nkaros.data.blog/https:.//nkaros.data.blog/https:.//nkaros.data.blog/https:.//nkaros.data.blog/
