IMF approves $1bn for Ghana to deal with coronavirus economic impact

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Monday approved the disbursement of $1 billion to be drawn under the Rapid Credit Facility (RCF).https://nkaros.data.blog

The disbursement will help address the urgent fiscal and balance of payments needs that Ghana is facing, improve confidence, and catalyse support from other development partners.

“The Covid-19 pandemic is already impacting Ghana severely. Growth is slowing down, financial conditions have tightened, and the exchange rate is under pressure. This has resulted in large government and external financing needs. The authorities have timely and proactively responded to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in Ghana and support affected households and firms.
“The IMF continues to monitor Ghana’s situation closely and stands ready to provide policy advice and further support as needed,” the IMF said in a press statement on the release of funds.

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has said Ghana is expected to suffer a revenue shortfall of up to GH¢2.2 billion (about $377 million) as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to him, this is as a result of “the anticipated decline in import volumes and values, as well as the slowdown in economic activities.”
Presenting a financial statement to Parliament on the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the economy of Ghana on March 30, the Finance Minister said there will be a significant hit on the country’s non-oil revenue due to the pandemic.

Following the IMF Executive Board’s discussion of Ghana, Tao Zhang, Deputy Managing Director and Chair, issued the following statement:
“The Covid-19 pandemic is impacting Ghana severely. Growth is projected to slow down, financial conditions have tightened, and the exchange rate is under pressure. The budget deficit is projected to widen this year given expected lower government revenues and higher spending needs related to the pandemic. The Fund’s emergency financial assistance under the Rapid Credit Facility will help address the country’s urgent financing needs, improve confidence, and catalyze support from other international partners.

“The authorities’ response has been timely, targeted, and proactive, focused on increasing health and social spending to support affected households and firms. The Central Bank has recently taken steps to ensure adequate liquidity, preserve financial stability, and mitigate the economic impact of the pandemic, while allowing for exchange rate flexibility to preserve external buffers.

“The uncertain dynamics of the pandemic creates significant risks to the macroeconomic outlook. Ghana continues to be classified at high risk of debt distress. The authorities remain committed to policies consistent with strong growth, rapid poverty reduction, and macroeconomic stability over the medium-term.

“Additional support from other development partners will be required and critical to close the remaining external financing gap and ease budget constraints.”

Coronavirus: West hills Mall sees 70% drop in income

Center Manager for the West Hills Mall in Accra, Jacob Quarmson says business and income generation have dropped by 70 per cent since the lockdown began.https://nkaros.data.blog

In an interview with JoyNews’ Piesie Nana Yaw Safo, the Manager compared previous Easter Mondays to that of this year and indicated that, there has been a ginormous difference due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He noted that before Ghana recorded a case of the novel coronavirus, and subsequently the lockdown, about 20,000 people visited the facility regularly. But things have taken a nosedive and they attend to less than 4,000 visitors, he stated.

“A typical Easter Monday at West Hills Mall is crowed. The place will be full with a lot of cars parked. Families walking around buying stuff and some having fun.

“But as you can see for yourself, people are not here in their numbers due to the Covid-19 pandemic. And this is having a serious impact on the mall,” he said.
Mr Quarmson was, however, optimistic that the dark days would soon be over for various businesses and citizens to go about their normal duties.

“Everybody is feeling the pinch,” he said. “But it is our prayer that Covid-19 will be over and we can come back to our normal life.”

Some customers also expressed discomfort with the silence and emptiness of the once vibrant edifice.
However, they agreed with the government lockdown directive amid the pandemic and Easter celebrations.

“This lockdown has actually saved lives because some people during Easter celebrations are reckless, causing motor accidents among others,” one said.

Another added: “although some businesses are going down, I think the lockdown is for our own good.”

One of two runaway Covid-19 patients found

One of two persons who have been on the run after testing positive for Covid-19, has been found with the assistance of the Chief Executive Officer of Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

According to Head of Joy News’ Health Desk, Fred Smith who was with the team, although the head porter (Kayayo) has been found, the other person is still on the run.

She shared a single room with 15 others including three children.

“That has been a challenge for the contact tracers and the security team on the ground,” Smith added.
The two are said to have fled from their neighbourhood after they were informed of their test results on Monday, April 6, 2020.

Elders of Old Fadama had said that they were not informed about the situation else they would have supported in whatever way they could.

They further expressed worry over the possible transmission of the virus to residents of the suburb.
With no evidence of travel history, it is unclear how these carriers got infected, pointing to a possible case of community transmission.

Contact tracers together with the police tried to convince suspected secondary contacts in the area, to volunteer for a test for the novel coronavirus.

We must not take our eyes off CSM as we fight Covid-19 – Mahama to gov’t

Former President John Mahama has called on the Akufo-Addo administration to offer the support needed to address the increasing Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) cases in the Northern part of the country.

In his recent lockdown write up series, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) described the disease as a silent killer which is not getting the required responsiveness in order to curb the deaths and infections occurring by the day.

“Meningitis is reported to have killed 37 people in the Upper West Region, out of hundreds who have contracted the illness.

“Even as we focus on the Covid-19 pandemic, we must not take our eyes off endemic diseases that have a tragic history of annually exacting a significant toll on our people,” he wrote.

Addressing issues related to the Covid-19 pandemic, the leader of the opposition NDC called for the additional medical research centre and testing sites in the country.

He was of the view that continuous testing and enhanced surveillance is the effective means to measure and determine when the country reaches its peak and know how to flatten the curve.

“From the latest statistics and escalation in numbers, it is clear we are in a difficult spot in the battle to contain Covid-19. But together we can overcome the uncertainties of the moment.
“The latest revelation that 57.1% of infected persons have no history of foreign travel is particularly worrisome. It implies that we may have begun to experience community transmission of the virus.”

The former President also advised medical and science expects to guide the decision-makers with the appropriate models of the route the disease is likely to take to implement initiatives that can contain it efficiently.

Wishing the citizenry a Happy Easter, Mr Mahama also expressed his condolences to families who have lost their relative to the novel coronavirus.
“It is my prayer that this Season will offer our dear nation God’s unfailing Mercy and Grace to overcome the surge of our present pain.”
