E/R: A Teacher Arrested For Dictating Answers To Students During WASSCE

A teacher [name withheld] in one of the Senior High Schools in the Eastern region has been interdicted for dictating answers to students in the ongoing West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations(WASSCE).

According to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, the police is conducting further investigation into the incident whilst his outfit also does a similar investigation.

An unfortunate incident which maybe has come to the attention of the media is that in one of the schools in the Eastern Region, a teacher was found dictating something on his phone to students.

The school officials and WAEC officials immediately reported him to the police,” the GES boss said on an Accra based radio station monitored by MyNewsGh.com

“Am told that he has been given bail but I have asked that he should be immediately interdicted, whilst we investigate the issue”, he emphasized.

He declined to mention the name of the school when pushed to the wall by the host of the show, but said that the police is investigating whilst his outfit also does a similar one.

On his impression about the WASSCE so far, he said “so far on the rounds it’s been very interesting. Generally the schools that we go, the students have comported themselves.”

“But ours is a formal way of going rounds; sometimes you need to have a certain eye or third eye to see some of the things”, he added.

Fact-Check: Are all students returning to school on September 8?

Claim: Education Minister says all students are returning to school on September 8.

Verdict: False.

Full claim
Most of Ghana’s students are currently at home due to COVID-19 restrictions except for final year Senior and Junior School students and University students who the government cleared to resume classes in June 2020 to complete their academic terms and sit for their exit examinations.

“From Monday, 15th June, 2020, the decision has been taken, after engagement with the Teacher Unions, whose co-operation I salute, to re-open schools and universities to allow for final year junior high, senior high and university students to resume classes ahead of the conduct of their respective exit examinations. Indeed, final year university students are to report to their universities on 15th June; final year senior high school (SHS 3) students, together with SHS 2 Gold Track students, on 22nd June; and final year junior high school (JHS 3) students on 29th June. JHS 3 classes will comprise a maximum of thirty (30) students; SHS classes a maximum of twenty-five (25) students; and University lectures will take place with half the class sizes,” President Akufo-Addo announced on May 31, 2020.

However, some website publications claim the Minister for Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has announced that all Ghanaian students are returning to school in September 2020.

Websites such as AddressGhana.com, Mediaghananews and Hardtruthgh.com that have published the stories claim that the minister said the decision was taken following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

“The green light for the resuming of all Ghanaian students has finally been shown, as students ranging from basic school to tertiary are to return back to their respective classrooms on Tuesday, 8th September 2020….According to the minister, since all restrictions as far as the pandemic is concerned has been lifted, it has also become necessary for schools to also resume. He went on to say, with the easing of the restrictions, these students will be seen all over the place, which wouldn’t be better off than them being school,” excerpts of the report read.

The claim has been shared on some pages on social media.

Full facts
Given that most students are currently at home due to COVID-19 restrictions, such a major announcement would be expected to be widely reported by credible media websites. However, Dubawa did not find the report on any major website.

While our calls to the Ministry of Education for comment on the claim went unanswered, the Ghana Education Service (GES), an agency under the Ministry which superintends over all basic and pre-tertiary affairs, said it has not issued any statement to that effect.

Cassandra Twum Ampofo, the Public Relations Officer of Ghana Education Service (GES), told Dubawa that the GES does not have any specific date yet as to when schools will reopen.

“For school reopening we have not issued any statement out there. We don’t have any specific date as to when schools will reopen,” she said.

Our further checks showed that the publication was first made by Hardtruthgh.com.

After browsing through the website, we found that it had been stated at its “about us” section at the bottom of the home page that they describe themselves as “Ghana’s leading Satire and Parody portal.”

The publication contains no element of parody or satire but clear falsehood deliberately created to misinform the public.

We, therefore, find the claim to be false.

Sudan’s Ousted President, Omar al-Bashir Appears In A Cage…Faces Death Sentence Over 1989 Coup That Brought Him To Power

Omar al-Bashir, the former Sudanese President Omar who was ousted last year following mass protests, has gone on trial in the capital over his role in the 1989 coup that brought him to power.
The 76-year-old appeared in court on Tuesday, July 21, alongside more than 20 former officials who are also standing trial in connection with the military coup. https//:nkaros.data.blog
The former officials include 10 military personnel and six civilians, including his former vice presidents, Ali Osman Taha, and Bakri Hassan Saleh, as well as former ministers and governors.
They all appeared in cages amid tight security conditions.
Al-Bashir, who has been jailed since his removal for corruption, faces charges of undermining the constitution, violating the Armed Forces Act and fomenting a coup in 1989 against the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi.
After hearing an appeal from the defense team, the judge adjourned the trial to August 11.
“We decided to postpone the trial session to Aug. 11 as we need a bigger hall in order to guarantee social distancing, put different arrangements in place and ensure that the entire defendants have lawyers and other rights,” the judge said.
In May 2019, Sudanese prosecution opened an investigation into charges against al-Bashir of undermining the country’s constitutional order over the coup.
On June 30, 1989, al-Bashir staged a military coup against the government of Prime Minister Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, and ruled the country under what he named the “national salvation revolution” for more than 30 years.
If convicted, the 76-year-old could face death penalty.

Whether EC compiles new voter roll or not, register for 2020 polls” – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has urged Ghanaians to register for the 2020 general elections, irrespective of any decision taken by the Electoral Commission (EC).

He said citizens must partake in the voter registration exercise even if the EC goes ahead with its plans to compile a new voter roll.

The EC has come under criticism in recent months over its decision to compile a new voter’s register for the 2020 polls.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vehemently kicked against the idea, claiming the Commission is scheming with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rig the elections.

John Mahama

But speaking to some chiefs at the Tongor area of South Dayi in the Volta Region, Mahama said they must encourage every citizen to register for the December elections no matter what the EC does.

“I want to remind all our citizens that, this year is an election year. The Electoral Commission has decided that it wants to conduct a registration exercise. We had disagreements with the Electoral Commission on what register to use and the matter has been at the Supreme Court and we are waiting for the Supreme Court for its verdict,” the NDC flagbearer said.

“Whatever verdict the Supreme Court gives, we are ready to be law-abiding citizens so we shall respect the verdict of the court. But whatever the verdict is, there is going to be a registration exercise whether a limited registration, new registration exercise, or validation of an existing register.

Whichever registration it is, I will like to plead with Togbui to beat the gong to all our people to come out and register so that in December they can register and exercise their votes,” he added.
Meanwhile, the NDC and the EC have a pending case at the Supreme Court over the Commission’s insistence on excluding the current voter ID as an identification document during the voter registration exercise.

Current register full of foreign nationals & ghosts – EC Boss Jean Mensah ‘raps’ TUC

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Mensa has insisted that the current register is not credible because it had been bloated with the names of foreign nationals and millions of dead people, MyNewsGh.com reports.

The EC boss said this is the case because her predecessor accepted the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards for voter registration while people have died with their names still on the register.

According to her, the Supreme Court determined that the NHIS card was not proof of citizenship and asked the EC, in 2014, to take out the names of those who used NHIS cards for the voters registration from the register. Jean Mensah it has become challenging because determining who used the card has become almost an impossible task hence her decision to compile a new register.

She said the above when she addressed the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) before proceeding to a closed-door engagement on the compilation of the new register in Accra yesterday in Accra.

According to her, the experts had indicated that the new system would require a new operational system which would, in effect, require a migration of the old data onto it but this could lead to bigger problems with loss of data, hence the new register.

“But the experts say the migration process could cause a huge loss of data and that may result in people not finding their names in the register on the voting day, and this is what we don’t want to compromise on,” she rapped the labour leaders.

In addition, the experts also cautioned that the quality of the print could reduce to an unreadable level during the migration, she said.

That will also cause a situation where prospective voters cannot be verified with their thumbprints, and that will force us to use manual verification to ensure that no one is disenfranchised,” Mrs Mensa said.

“However, mass manual verification will give room to manipulation because anybody can vote with any card, even if it was not his or hers, because there will be no electronic way of verifying, and we do not want to come to that,” she said.
